Psychologyย โ theย most underrated source ofย rating
Players below 1700 look forย rating inย openings andย tactics. Almost never inย psychology. Theyโre missingย out.
Looking atย full game data shows that 20โ30% ofย lost rating atย any level isnโt โdidnโt know theย tacticโ orย โweak opening.โ Itโs:
- Tilt after aย loss (3 games inย aย row, lost all three).
- Time pressure inย aย winning position (hung aย piece onย theย increment).
- Premature resignation inย aย position that wasnโt lost.
- โRevenge modeโย โ chasing aย rematch against aย specific opponent.
chess.rodeo tracks several key indicators inย theย stats section. This article isย about how toย read them andย what toย doย with them.
Tilt rate: โloss after aย lossโ
Tilt rateย โ theย percent ofย games lost immediately after theย previous loss. Theย average 1300โ1700 player sits atย 40โ55%. Above thatย โ youโre systematically tilting.
What toย do:
- Hard rule: 2 losses inย aย rowย โ stop. Close theย client, take aย 30-minute walk minimum. Notย โone more forย revengeโย โ thatโs theย worst move you can make.
- Donโt play blitz after losing aย rapid game. Itย feels like comfort, butย itโs aย guaranteed slideย โ atย faster controls you blunder more, notย less.
- Check your tilt rate weekly. Ifย itโs climbing, something outside chess isย happening (rough week, sleep loss, stress).
Tilt rate >60% means youโre notย โlearning from mistakesโย โ youโre stacking frustration. Theย fix isnโt inย chess content, itโs inย your routine (sleep, breaks, aย โOKย toย play / notย OKย toย playโ checklist).
Recovery rate: doย you bounce back?
Recovery rate isย theย flip side ofย tilt rateย โ percent ofย games won immediately after aย loss.
Aย solid player: โฅ40%. Aย tilting player: <25%.
Ifย your recovery rate isย low butย youโre notย exceeding 2 games inย aย row, that means you bounce back viaย rest, notย โtheย next game.โ Thatโs healthy andย effective.
Timeout rate: aย sign ofย anย opening problem
Timeout rateย โ percent ofย games lost onย time.
Healthy range forย rapid (10+0 / 15+10): <5%. Ifย youโre atย 15โ20%ย โ itโs aย systemic issue:
- You probably spend too much time inย theย opening.
- Theย openings you play are probably unfamiliar toย you, soย you reason every move from scratch.
Fix:
- Shrink your opening repertoire. Ifย you play aย different opening every game, pickย one. See Minimal opening repertoire.
- Spend โค25% ofย your time onย theย first 10 moves. Inย aย 10-minute rapid game, thatโs โค2.5 minutes forย theย opening. Ifย itย takes 5ย โ either you donโt have aย repertoire, orย you learned itย theย wrongย way.
- The chess.rodeo game analysis has aย per-move time chart. Check itย regularly: where did you spend โweirdly longโ?
Resignation rate: are you resigning too early?
Looking atย full games shows that roughly 10โ15% ofย resignations are premature. Theย player resigns inย aย position where theย opponent has noย clear winning plan.
Signs ofย aย premature resignation:
- You resigned after dropping aย piece, even though theย opponentโs material edge wasnโt critical.
- You resigned inย aย โhopelessโ position your opponent atย this level very likely couldnโt convert.
- You resigned emotionally, without checking what was actually left onย theย board.
Rule: donโt resign inย rapid. Play toย mate orย toย aย draw. Atย 1300โ1700 opponents blunder regularlyย โ even from won positions. You lose rating byย handing them games you could hold orย win onย aย slip.
Inย blitz resignation isย more justified (noย point holding โ5 with noย queen), butย inย rapidย โ play itย out.
Streaks (best/worst streak)
Best win streak / worst loss streakย โ notย โluck,โ butย psychological resilience:
- Long winning streakย โ youโre inย form. Donโt change anything.
- Long losing streakย โ youโre stuck inย โIโm playing badly โ Iโm upset โ Iโm playing worse.โ Take aย break, now.
- Constant short streaks (1โ2 wins, 1โ2 losses)ย โ youโre playing stably. Good sign.
Aย 5+ loss streak isย aย red flag. Something isย systemically offย โ sleep, stress, orย youโre playing above your level.
Time budget byย phase
Universal rule forย rapid (10+0 orย 15+10):
- Opening (โค10 moves): โค25% ofย theย clock.
- Middlegame (11โ35 moves): โ50%.
- Endgame (>35 moves): theย remainingย 25%.
Why save time forย theย endgame? Because atย 1300โ1700 endgames are decided byย knowing concrete positions (see 7 endgames)ย โ andย ifย youโre short onย time inย theย endgame youโll throw away even aย winning position.
Compare: spend 8 ofย 10 minutes inย theย middlegame, you have 2 minutes left forย 25 endgame moves. Thatโs notย chess, itโs aย lottery.
Move-times chart
Theย game analysis has aย per-move time chartย โ each barย shows how long you thought onย aย given move. Look atย itย after every serious game:
- Big spike inย theย opening? You donโt know that lineย โ learn itย orย pick aย different repertoire.
- Big spike inย theย middlegame? Saw aย tactic andย calculated? Good. Orย โhunting forย aย moveโ with noย idea? Badย โ sign thereโs noย plan.
- Lots ofย small bars inย theย endgame? Playing โbyย feelโ instead ofย knowledge. Ifย you donโt know Lucena, learnย it.
Theย time chart isย aย retrospective onย your decisions. Reviewing itย weekly surfaces patterns you wouldnโt see otherwise.
Psychological rules
- Sleep beats tactics. Donโt play rated games onย <6 hours ofย sleep.
- 2 losses inย aย rowย โ pause. 30 minutes minimum.
- Long unbroken sessions = leak. After 5 gamesย โ break, noย matter ifย youโre winning orย losing.
- Donโt resign inย rapid. Play toย mate.
- Open theย coach stats once aย week. Weaknesses, openings, common mistakesย โ thatโs your mirror.
