Why play the┬аLondon
The┬аLondon System is┬аthe┬аmost practical White repertoire for┬аthe┬а1300тАУ1700 range. Not┬аa┬атАЬsecret weaponтАЭ┬атАФ a┬аuniversal development scheme that works against almost everything.
What it┬аgives you:
- Less theory. Know 6тАУ8 moves and┬аa┬аcouple of┬аtypical plans┬атАФ against any Black response.
- No surprises. Black canтАЩt prep you out┬аof┬аthe┬аopening.
- Clear middlegame plans. Kingside attack via┬аNe5+f4, or┬аqueenside expansion via┬аc4/b4.
- Carlsen plays it┬аregularly. ItтАЩs not┬аa┬атАЬweak playerтАЩs opening.тАЭ
WhatтАЩs not┬аideal:
- At┬аtop level it┬аgives Black easy equality.
- A┬аbit dry for┬аtactics lovers.
At┬а1300тАУ1700 these downsides donтАЩt matter. You have a┬аsystem you understand and┬аplay automatically┬атАФ thatтАЩs enough.
Core development scheme
Memorize the┬аsequence:
1.d4
2.Nf3
3.Bf4 тЖР key move тАФ bishop outside the pawn chain BEFORE e3
4.e3
5.c3 тЖР supports d4, prepares Qb1/Bd3 ideas
6.Nbd2 тЖР NOT Nc3! the c-pawn needs to stay flexible
7.Bd3 (or Be2)
8.h3 тЖР prophylactic against ...Bg4 / ...Nh5
9.O-OThatтАЩs the┬аbase scheme. The┬аexact move order is┬аflexible, what matters is┬аthe┬аpicture: bishop on┬аf4, knights on┬аf3 and┬аd2, pawns on┬аc3-d4-e3, bishop on┬аd3, kingside castling.
Two main plans
Plan A: kingside attack
- Ne5┬атАФ the┬аknight takes a┬аdominant central square.
- f4┬атАФ supports the┬аknight, prepares the┬аstorm.
- Qf3 or┬аQh5┬атАФ queen heads for┬аthe┬аking.
- Rae1 or┬аRf3-h3┬атАФ rook joins the┬аattack.
- g4-g5 or┬аh4-h5┬атАФ pawn storm.
Works when Black has castled short and┬аhasnтАЩt set up┬аserious defence.
Plan B: queenside expansion
- c4 or┬аa3 + b4┬атАФ pawn expansion.
- Qb3 or┬аQb1┬атАФ supports b4-b5.
- Rfc1┬атАФ rook on┬аthe┬аc-file.
- b5┬атАФ minority attack, target BlackтАЩs c6 pawn.
Works in┬аmore closed positions where the┬аkingside attack doesnтАЩt go┬аthrough.
Which plan to┬аchoose follows from BlackтАЩs setup. If┬аBlack sits closed (тАжc6, тАжNbd7)┬атАФ plan┬аB. If┬аtheyтАЩve castled and┬аweakened pawns┬атАФ plan┬аA.
Against 1тАжd5 (classical London)
- 1.2.3.4.тЖ│ Bd6: Black tries to trade off the bishop5.тЖ│ Bg3: DONтАЩT trade тАФ keep the bishop!6.7.8.9.
After hxg3 you have:
- Semi-open h-file (rook on┬аh1 ready for┬аh4-h5).
- Bd3 + Nf3 + queen pointing at┬аthe┬аking.
- BlackтАЩs bishop is┬аgone┬атАФ fewer kingside defenders.
Standard London position where you go┬аwith plan┬аA.
If┬аBlack plays 4тАжc5
- 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.
Same idea┬атАФ keep the┬аbishop, then plan A┬аor┬аB.
Against 1тАжNf6 + тАжg6 (KingтАЩs Indian / Gr├╝nfeld setups)
- 1.2.3.4.тЖ│ d6: or ...d5 тАФ Gr├╝nfeld setup5.тЖ│ Be2: NOT Bd3 against the fianchettoed g7 bishop тАФ would block its own diagonal6.7.
Then the┬аplan: either c4 (central break) or┬аc3 + Nbd2 (classical London). At┬а1300тАУ1700 just play c3 and┬аdevelop calmly.
DonтАЩt fear the┬аfianchetto. The┬аg7 bishop is┬аstrong, but┬аyour central pawn structure (c3-d4-e3) gives stability.
Against 1тАжNf6 + тАжc5 (Benoni, Benko)
- 1.2.3.тЖ│ d5: DONтАЩT play c3 тАФ close the centre with d54.5.6.7.
Here the┬аLondon тАЬdoesnтАЩt workтАЭ┬атАФ against тАжc5 on┬аmove 2 you should close the┬аcentre. Exception to┬аthe┬аpure-London scheme.
Alternative: 3.e3 cxd4 4.exd4┬атАФ play a┬аsymmetrical pawn position without losing tempos on┬аBf4.
Against early тАжBf5 (mirror London)
- 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.
In┬аthe┬аmirror London White is┬аalways better┬атАФ a┬аtempo┬аup.
Against early тАжc5 (move 2 with pawn d5)
- 1.2.3.4.5.тЖ│ c3: KEY move: prevents ...Nb4 and supports d46.7.тЖ│ Bg3: classical treatment тАФ retreat the bishop before the trade8.

When to┬аmove on
The┬аLondon works up┬аto┬атЙИ1700тАУ1800. Signs to┬аswitch:
- You consistently beat 1500тАУ1700 opponents but┬аhit easy Black equality against 1800+ and┬аcanтАЩt play for┬аa┬аwin.
- YouтАЩre bored and┬аwant deeper strategy.
- You understand what the┬атАЬCarlsbad structureтАЭ is┬аand┬аwant to┬аplay┬аit.
